There is no shortcut to this place, and I think that is part of why it photographs the way it does. You either win the permit lottery in February or you walk eighteen miles in a single day with a camera bag that gets heavier by the hour. I have done it both ways and I will tell you the truth, which is that the through-hike leaves you with thirty minutes of usable light at Inspiration Lake before you have to keep moving, and that thirty minutes will haunt you. The Core Zone in late September is the photograph. The larches turn gold around the third week of the month, give or take a week depending on the year, and when that color lands against the polished granite and the impossibly clear water of Perfection Lake, you are working with a palette that does not exist anywhere else I have been in the Cascades. The light at golden hour comes in low and sideways across the basin and the granite goes warm in a way that almost reads as artificial in the photograph. It is not. That is what the rock actually does up there. The mountain goats are a gift and a complication. They are habituated and they will walk straight through your composition. I have learned to let them. Some of my favorite frames from this place are the ones where a goat appears in the middle distance and gives the granite its scale. Bring a wide lens for the basins and something longer for the goats and the reflections. Sleep up there if you can. The lakes go still around five in the morning and that is when the place becomes itself.
