I came to Leavenworth expecting kitsch and found, on the river path just below town, a quieter photograph than I had planned for. The waterfront park is a strange and lovely seam between two ideas - the painted Bavarian facades a few blocks uphill, and the actual Cascades rising behind them, indifferent to the theme. The Wenatchee runs cold and clear through the middle of it, and in mid October the cottonwoods turn the color of struck matches. That is the season I would choose if I could only choose one. Late afternoon, golden hour pulled long by the mountains to the west, the river holding the last of the light while the peaks have already gone blue. The cottonwoods frame the view in a way that feels almost deliberate. A wide lens earns its place here, but I have made my favorite frame from this park with something closer to a fifty, isolating a single tree against the ridge and letting the river do the work in the foreground. December is the other argument. The Christmas lighting weekends draw real crowds, and I will be honest that I have mostly avoided them, but the weeknights between are something else entirely. Snow on the rooftops uphill, the village glowing warm, the river running black through it all. Park early. Walk down to the water before the light goes. The photograph is there if you are willing to stand in the cold long enough to find it.
